The Centre for Health Science (CfHS) is leading the way on new developments in the health science cluster within the Highlands and Islands through the next phase at the Inverness Campus. Delivering facilities which enhance physical, mental and social wellbeing is central to their aspirations. 7N have produced a feasibility study for a new building which will incorporate a Centre for Academic Primary Care, a multi-disciplinary healthcare practice and premises for associated research (The Wellbeing Project and the Natural products Network).
The building has been arranged to encourage interaction and collaboration between these various users and the layout reflects this through an emphasis on shared spaces and a ‘public street’ at its heart. These issues were considered in parallel with strategies for accommodating future expansion and flexibility. The study also explored ways to integrate the new facility with the strong landscape framework of the Campus masterplan, taking advantage of existing watercourses and introducing strong structural planting to define linkages and break up parking areas. The successful integration of the building with its associated landscaped external spaces was key to the overall scheme design.
