The Glasgow Paddlesports Centre is a catalyst regeneration intervention at Pinkston Basin, Port Dundas. It sets a precedent for innovative development in the area and provides excellent opportunities for sport and recreation for the local community, close to the city centre. 7N were commissioned by Glasgow City Council to review initial proposals by EPD Ltd. and assist in design development towards a planning application. The scheme reflects the desire for a high profile, low-cost landmark facility, appropriate to its ex-industrial, canalside setting and flexible enough for future expansion.
A tower of five stacked shipping containers provides a tall landmark feature which gives the facility visibility, presence and identity and provides an entrance vestibule to the classrooms. Recycled shipping containers are also used to store equipment and will be leased to different users as needs arise. The shared hub facilities are clustered to one side of the entrance and the whole complex is fronted by a full-length canopy which creates a sheltered edge to the water for gathering and viewing.
